Report Cruelty to Animals
Be an Angel to Animals in Your Travels
The first step to becoming a compassionate traveler is to increase your awareness of what forms of animal mistreatment you may encounter during your travels and to avoid spending your money in ways that will fuel more abuse. This is a list of examples and is not exhaustive. Animal abuse comes in many forms.
The second step is to know what to do when you encounter abuse. Animals in need never get a vacation. When you're planning your trip, don't forget to plan for the animals you may encounter in your travels.
Before You Go
- Print a list of animal protection organizations near your destination and take it with you. (Please note: PETA has not worked directly with all organizations listed and cannot guarantee their assistance.)
- Learn how to help abused animals.
- Be prepared. In some countries, there are many unwanted, abandoned, sick, and dying stray animals. Find out ways to improve and/or set up humane animal shelters.
If You Witness Cruelty to Animals While Traveling
- Calmly but firmly ask the abusers to stop. If they refuse, contact law enforcement.
- Get the date, time, place, description, and a photograph (if possible) of the incident. Immediately report it to the closest animal protection organization.
- Stay until the situation is resolved. You may be the animal's only hope!
After You Return Home
- Write the tourist board and/or embassy. Ask that it inform appropriate authorities of the abuse and implement comprehensive animal protection laws and set up humane shelters if they don't exist.
- Inform PETA of the incident so we can help.
