How to Organize a Demonstration
Call several friends to join you, or contact PETA for a list of activists in your area. Contact PETA for leaflets, posters, and other supplies that you may need.
For visual interest, rent a dog costume (or borrow one from PETA). If possible, bring along a dog from a shelter or your own companion dog. Please make sure that the dog is one who would enjoy this activity and likes being around people.
The day before the demonstration, fax a news release announcing the event to every media outlet in your area. On the morning of the demonstration, call the assignment editors at each outlet and briefly tell them about your event.
One well-dressed, articulate person should act as spokesperson and should be prepared with concise, information-packed facts.
The protester wearing the costume should carry a sign, and another protester should hand out literature to passersby.
Arrive early, at least 30 minutes before the announced start of the demonstration so that you will be prepared when the media arrive.
Be positive! Tell people what’s wrong with puppy mills, but also tell them what they can do to help—adopting from shelters rather than buying puppies at pet stores.
For help with any of these steps, contact PETA—e-mail pups@peta.org.
