October 3, 2005, 4 p.m.: PETA Team Continues to Rescue, Care for Katrina’s Animal Victims

PETA’s most recently dispatched team of animal rescue workers and animal caretakers continues to toil around the clock in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana—which PETA’s starting rescue team was the first humane agency to access weeks ago—and neighboring Plaquemines Parish.

Team member Jason Huff reports that he has been walking dogs from morning until night since arriving on September 28, as well as cleaning out cages and feeding and watering hundreds of animals.

Huff also worked to rescue animals on Saturday. “We were able to rescue six dogs total,” Jason said. “There was one who buried herself in a shed that had trees crashed in on it. She hid very well, but we were able to get into the shed and rescue her. Another dog was standing in a front yard, and I just walked slowly behind the van and sat down and patted the ground. She walked over to me without any hesitation and lay down, resting her head on my knee. Her eyes were crusted over, almost to the point that from a distance, it looked as if she were missing both of her eyes. She was so sweet and shy—I fell in love with her instantly.”
