With hurricanes, tornados, and other forms of natural disaster wreaking havoc, worried animal guardians wonder how best to protect their best friends.

Your support, directed to PETA’s Animal Emergency Fund, will help us continue our work to help animals wherever they are in need. In addition, your valuable donation will help run public service announcements and provide vital support and information to other areas threatened by fires, storms, and natural disasters so that animals won’t be put in the dangerous position of needing rescue, because their guardians will learn that the only way to protect their entire family during a disaster is to evacuate with their companion animals. PETA’s Read the Open Letter to Mr. Bush From Rue McClanahanAnimal Emergency Fund also enables us to respond to overturned pig trucks—and work to prevent those accidents—and to facilitate many other lifesaving rescues. PETA’s Animal Emergency Program watches for dangerous weather throughout the United States and responds quickly through public service announcements and media outreach to alert local residents to the threat and how they can protect animals in their own communities. Along with these disaster-preparedness programs, PETA also works tirelessly to prevent needless suffering every day, rescuing animals from abusers, hoarders, and backyard breeders and educating the public about the dangers of backyard dogs, chained and confined to a life of misery exposed to the elements. There are effective ways to prepare for weather emergencies, and the most important of those is to make arrangements ahead of time to ensure animals' safety in the event of evacuation. Fortunately, there are useful resources to help you plan. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) offers excellent tips, a worksheet, and even online courses about disaster preparedness for animal guardians. Regardless of what the emergency is, evacuees should never assume that they will be able to return home soon, despite any assurances to the contrary. Take a moment now to make the following preparations so you’ll be ready for the worst.
