Homeowner’s Insurance
Each year in the U.S, dog bite claims cost insurance companies millions of dollars, which is why many companies are now refusing to write coverage for specific dog breeds, such as Rottweilers, pit bulls, Chows, German shepherds, Dalmatians, huskies, Airedales, and Great Danes.
While many insurers acknowledge that that it is not fair to "blacklist" certain dog breeds, they recognize that certain breeds have a statistical history of biting. In deciding whether or not to insure a homeowner with a "dangerous dog," many companies look for evidence that homeowners are taking steps to prevent bites by having their dogs spayed or neutered and keeping them indoors and on leashes and under supervision when outdoors.
If you're having trouble finding an insurer because you have a dog, ask your prospective insurer if you can get an exclusion for your dog. In such a case, the insurance company would not be responsible for covering liability claims caused by your dog.
If the company is unwilling to work with you on this issue, you may wish to appeal the decision with your state's insurance department.
