Declare a “Winter Watch” for Animals

Cold weather also spells extra hardship for outdoor dogs who can suffer from frostbite, exposure, and dehydration when water sources freeze. Remind the dogs’ owners to increase animals’ food rations during winter (they are burning more calories to keep warm, and to be sure animals are free of internal parasites, which can rob them of vital nutrients. If you see a dog who has inadequate shelter, offer to build him or her a warm, durable doghouse. For doghouse building instructions, see “Legal Shelter for Your Dog.” To help other dogs in your community, organize a straw giveaway or doghouse giveaway with some of your friends.
